Cost Effective Wind Turbines
An increase in popularity of the wind turbine for homes is due to the ‘going green‘ attitude being adopted by more and more consumers. Wind turbines may not, as of yet, produce enough energy to be free from the utility grid, in most cases, the consumers feel that the impact of clean energy and the reduction in their electric bills is enough and a very cost effective way to make a difference concerning their environment.
The cost of wind turbines of residential homes will depend on how much energy your wind turbine will produce. The price of wind turbines can range from $500 to over $22,000, but the average cost is usually around $10,000. This cost is affected by the amount of wind that you get in your area. Determining that you receive enough wind, you’ll then know what size wind turbine to buy. Plus, it’s always wise to make sure that the energy efficiency of your home, like the windows, doors and appliances is up to par, because this too will be a key factor in seeing the savings when you begin to use wind power.
The area you live in will also determine the use and the cost efficiencies of the wind turbine. If you live in a heavily populated area, it’s not recommended to buy a wind turbine, there is simply not enough space. But, if you decide to use a wind turbine, it will be very expensive and your output will be small; this is not very cost effective. If you live in a rural area, this is where a wind turbine becomes cost effective. The turbines will be less expensive, but the amount of energy produced will still not be enough to totally get you off the utility grid. Total energy self-sufficiency requires more than one wind turbine, this increases you output exponentially and most self-producing energy wind turbines are placed on towers in order to harness the best wind power and the excess wind energy will need to be stored in a system of batteries.
Tax credits are available to any residential home installing a wind turbine. You may also be able to write-off the cost, or receive a tax break, or be offered a renewable $1,000 tax credit. Many States now offer incentives or rebates for wind power, plus installing a wind turbine is considered a home improvement, which adds to the value of your home. It will take about three year to fully recoup from your initial installation costs and you will certainly see a yearly savings on your energy bills.
