A Movie House in Boston

Boston is a city that’s chock full of history. It’s the home to some of the most dramatic and influential events in the founding of the country’s contemporary government, and there are plenty of sights for history buffs to visit. Guests at Boston hotels are treated to all the sights and attractions celebrating the past, and the present is an awfully nice place to visit as well.

There are other histories that one can visit in Boston as well, and not the least of which is the history of entertainment and film. For this, the Somerville Theatre has some rather wonderful things to offer. Today, it shows first-run films, and guests can enjoy the fresh popcorn that brought people here in the last century. There are also other events here, highlighting its spirit of service to the community. Indie Film Festivals give local artists a place to show their work, and also offer the audiences a chance to see what’s new and coming up in the film world.

Its history, however, might be the central attraction, and it’s certainly one of the big selling points. When it began, it was not only a place to show films, but a site for live performance. Tallulah Bankhead has graced the stage, and Busby Berkeley directed here in the years before the Depression. It’s been part of the local community for generations, and it’s a great place to see what the next generation in Boston is doing to soothe their filmgoing desires.

MADDRAMA in Jackson, Mississippi

Jackson, Mississippi has a great deal of cultural elements that are representative of both its history and contemporary society. It is growing in popularity as a tourist destination and many of the top places to stay are recommending some of the city’s finest new entertainment options. In addition, some of the standard cultural aspects of the city are reflective of both the past and the future, which is particularly appealing to citizens and tourists alike. The MADDRAMA Performance Troupe is just one of these great establishments.

The theatre was originally established by Mark G. Henderson in 1998 on the campus of Jackson State University. At the time of its initial founding the intent was to create a stable outlet for theatrical expression on campus. This was not the only theatre on campus, though it was the first to provide an opportunity for new work development and individual artistic expression, which was necessary to the students at the time. It has since grown to become an extremely important institution and has become more directed in its mission and purpose. It expanded its scope of inclusion in 2000 and became a official campus organization in 2003. Today the company is focused on promoting a sense of excellence in theatre arts and specializes in works by African Americans.

Some of the company’s plays include the productions The Soul of Black Folk and An African American Salute to Broadway. Both of these shows present aspects of black culture and elements of music and dance. In the Broadway salute some of the most popular New York productions that were by or predominantly featured African American performers are presented. Mama, Dream Girls , The Wiz and Jelly’s Last Jam are just some of the shows that have scenes and musical numbers featured. This show represents an evolution of theatre experiences and also presents some of the glitz and glamor of Broadway.

The Best of New York City

We had a few days left before we flew back home, so we decided to see the sights of the best city in the world – New York.

If you haven’t been to New York, here are some handy tips about seeing New York. View New York from the top of buildings. We recommend the top of the Rockefeller located on 49th Street between 5th and 6th Avenue. Go ahead a do the usual sights, such as Times Square, but be prepared that it is a very busy and do go see the Statue of Liberty (that’s busy too).

Now, for the places that are off the beaten track, we recommend the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, it has the best Japanese garden besides Japan, and it also is close to Prospect Park, which is Brooklyn’s answer to Central Park. Of course, the best time to see these sites is either in Spring or in Autumn, any other time it will be horribly hot or terribly cold.

New York City has the best restaurants you could ever hope for, we found a place in the Tribeca neighborhood called Ninja, it’s very expensive, but we really do highly recommend it. The cuisine is Japanese and the food is excellent. For something less expensive, we found a place in Queens called Astoria. This restaurant was great for being in a melting pot culturally speaking and the food is fantastic.

For great places to have a drink, we went outside Manhattan into Brooklyn’s neighborhood of Williamsburg. You can get there by jumping on the L train and get off at the first stop in Brooklyn called Bedford Avenue. There are literally hundreds of really cool bars, so the only problem you’ll have is choosing which one to go into.

If you’re in New York on a Wednesday evening, check out the Apollo Theater in Harlem. Wednesday night is amateur night at the Apollo. It’s so fun and fantastic. You can get drinks there and boo off anyone you don’t like.

New York is really the best city in the whole world and it has something to offer any day of the week and at any time of the day. It’s definitely a must for any serious traveler

Omnisphere in Greensboro

If you’re traveling in North Carolina, you’ll find a number of things to do during the day in Greensboro: The Arboretum, the Greensboro Historical Museum, the Guilford Courthouse National Military Park.  But what if you’re staying over in one of the hotels of Greensboro? What if you’re looking for something to do at night?  There’s an answer, at least for Febuary 19th.  The Natural Science Center’s Omnisphere is presenting a laser show, titled Laser U2, at seven, eight and nine o’clock at night, where you’ll be able to watch laser light dance and flash across the forty foot dome of the Omnisphere to the tunes of U2.  Each show lasts about an hour.  Based on my experiences with laserium shows in Los Angeles, this should be well worth a visit.  But, of course, it’s not the only thing the Natural Science Center or the Omnisphere has to offer.

During the day, you’ll be able to see some spectacular 3-D movies at affordable rates.  While schedules may change, according to the present listing at the Omnisphere, you’ll find Bugs! A Rainforest Adventure in 3-D, narrated by Academy Award winning actress Judi Dench, and Sea Monsters in 3-D, which is on a return engagement due to its popularity.  Sea Monsters plays Mondays at three p.m., while Bugs! may be seen at two and four in the afternoon on Mondays to Sundays.  If you arrive a little earlier in the day, you can see at one in the afternoon two features that explore astronomical sights: The Other Side of Infinity: Black Holes, and Seasonal Stargazing.

These features can be seen for six dollars for the 3-D films, and five dollars for the 2-D films; this is in addition to the admission fee to the Natural Science Center; however, if you arrive no more than fifteen minutes before showtime, then the Science Center fee is waived.  However, I’d arrive even earlier and explore the exhibits of the Science Center, too.  It makes for an excellent day for travelers and their families in Greensboro.

A Quick Overview of Singapore

If you’ve never been to Singapore before, then you might want to take a look at what there is to do once you land on this island city-state.  The city began as a Malaysian fishing village on the Singapore River.  Then, in 1819, Sir Stamford Raffles of the British East India Company established a trading post here, and it’s this small trading post that became Singapore, a cosmopolitan city of five million, where English, Chinese, Malay, and Tamil are the spoken languages.

You can easily find a hotel before arrival simply by going to this website, http://www.singaporehotels.com.sg.  Once you arrive, though, and settle into your hotel, what’s some of the attractions you might find?  Well, Singapore has quite an abundance of animal attractions.  There’s the Singapore Zoo, as well as several nature parks.  For instance, the zoo offers a Night Safari, from which you can see nocturnal animals from all over the globe.  There’s also Underwater World, an impressive aquarium, as well as the Jurong Bird Park and the Butterfly & Insect Kingdom.  But perhaps you haven’t come to Singapore to see wild animals.  You might like to pick out the landmarks of the city, such as Merlion Park or the Art House at the Old Parliament House.  Sir Stamford Raffles is well represented by a number of statues.   Through the center of the city, you’ll find the Singapore Rivers, which allowed for Raffles’ trading post to grow into this city.  You’ll still Victorian and neo-classical Roman buildings here, dating back to the Nineteenth Century.

You’ll find a number of theme parks here, as well, but perhaps one of the most interesting is the Singapore Flyer, one of the world’s largest “observation wheels,” like the London Eye in the United Kingdom, but bigger.

Singapore has a great many parks and gardens, including the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, the Chinese Garden, the Fort Canning Park, the Singapore Botanic Garden and the East Coast Park.  It’s also filled with a great many museums, one of which you might like to take a look at if you want to learn more about the history of the City of the Lion: The Singapore History Museum will take you through the life of the city dating back to the 14th Century to the present.

Young Musician Says Goodbye to Dallas

Clark has been in a state of confusion and near dismay, if he could admit it, for nearly a year. He made up his mind that he should move to Austin from Dallas because he was trying to pursue a career in music. He was a singer/songwriter/guitarist who also played the piano. He love music and can’t remember a time in his life when he wasn’t playing something. His parents frequently tell stories of him at two years old trying to climb up on the piano bench. When someone would seat him one it he would go to town on the keyboard. Of course he wasn’t actually playing anything, but sometimes it almost sounded like he was. And he could mimic the chords his mother would demonstrate for him. She was a skilled pianist and would play the piano when she was pregnant as well as play it for him he was in his crib. Most babies wake up in the middle of the night and cry to be picked up or fed, Clark would wake up and cry to hear the piano. Yes, those were stories his parents, particularly his mother, would love to tell.

Dallas was Clark’s home. He was born there and grew up in the same house in which he first arrived from the hospital. He moved out into his own apartment last year, which brought him to the greater consideration of major life circumstance needs. He loved the Dallas Cowboys and couldn’t imagine life without his weekly seafood sandwich fix at St. Pete’s Dancing Marlin. He imagined his life as a successful musician and what it would be like to someday return to Dallas and stay in one of the local hotels. He started to imagine this every time he passed one of the hotels and he started to feel like he was only there visiting. He would walk past the West End Pub and imagine himself to play there as a special appearance when he returned. Slowly he knew it was time for him to leave. He considered by Los Angeles and Austin and finally chose Austin. He even had a friend there who was willing to rent him a room. Clark prepared to announce his final decision when he was home for dinner that night.

Building the Perfect Custom Outdoor Barbecue

The barrel barbecues on wheels, are convenient as they can be rolled away into the shed when not in use, however when you decide to install an outdoor kitchen, complete with sinks, refrigerators, and drop in grills, you open up an entirely new world of entertaining and outdoor dinner parties, and creative new dishes enhanced in the way that out door cooking enhances the flavors and the experience.  At one time, built in barbecue grills were all the rage, then the portable gas and charcoal grills became popular.

But again there has been a resurgence in the desire for people to bring their home life back outdoors.  How you decide on the perfect design will depend quite honestly on just how much you have to spend.  A fire pit is an inexpensive way to permanently install an outdoor grill.  There are islands that you can build which will be a bit more fancy, and there are all out kitchens with high tech meat roasters and smokers, grills with additional burns, fans and storage cabinets.

Wood and charcoal burning grills are very simple, and have even been constructed out of old metal barrels.  Should you decide to add a wood burning or charcoal grill, be aware that ventilation and air circulation is sufficient, especially when you are considering a closed in gazebo style kitchen.  These are the kinds of grills that are easily built by do it your-selfers, using simple rocks or bricks and cement.  Such grills can basically be finished in a single afternoon.

Make sure when adding the grills, that they are located in a place that will remain safe for many years to come, away from over growing trees and plants, and far enough from other structures that may catch fire.  It is wise to hire a designer, if you yourself are not skilled in this area, as it is visually pleasing when the design of the grill fits in with the design of your house.

Depending on where you live, and the weather year round, is recommended that you have ways to cover and protect the grill when the natural elements are at their worst.  Keep in mind the cleaning and the repair that will be necessary over the years, as you don’t want to be cutting through stones and bricks to repair the grill, ruining your design and making an easy job much harder in the end.  There may seem to be many aspects to consider when adding this kind of amenity to your backyard and to your life, but it will be well worth it for many years to come

Cost Effective Wind Turbines

An increase in popularity of the wind turbine for homes is due to the ‘going green‘ attitude being adopted by more and more consumers. Wind turbines may not, as of yet, produce enough energy to be free from the utility grid, in most cases, the consumers feel that the impact of clean energy and the reduction in their electric bills is enough and a very cost effective way to make a difference concerning their environment.

The cost of wind turbines of residential homes will depend on how much energy your wind turbine will produce. The price of wind turbines can range from $500 to over $22,000, but the average cost is usually around $10,000. This cost is affected by the amount of wind that you get in your area. Determining that you receive enough wind, you’ll then know what size wind turbine to buy. Plus, it’s always wise to make sure that the energy efficiency of your home, like the windows, doors and appliances is up to par, because this too will be a key factor in seeing the savings when you begin to use wind power.

The area you live in will also determine the use and the cost efficiencies of the wind turbine. If you live in a heavily populated area, it’s not recommended to buy a wind turbine, there is simply not enough space. But, if you decide to use a wind turbine, it will be very expensive and your output will be small; this is not very cost effective. If you live in a rural area, this is where a wind turbine becomes cost effective. The turbines will be less expensive, but the amount of energy produced will still not be enough to totally get you off the utility grid. Total energy self-sufficiency requires more than one wind turbine, this increases you output exponentially and most self-producing energy wind turbines are placed on towers in order to harness the best wind power and the excess wind energy will need to be stored in a system of batteries.

Tax credits are available to any residential home installing a wind turbine. You may also be able to write-off the cost, or receive a tax break, or be offered a renewable $1,000 tax credit. Many States now offer incentives or rebates for wind power, plus installing a wind turbine is considered a home improvement, which adds to the value of your home. It will take about three year to fully recoup from your initial installation costs and you will certainly see a yearly savings on your energy bills.

Great Hottub Conversations

With a hottub as part of the identity that makes up your home, things do indeed begin to look brighter.  Making the decision to invite the luxury, relaxation, and pure fun that hottubs offer into the place where you live, helps to make your home a place of retreat and refuge.  You can look forward to the pleasures of the hot water on your tired muscles at the end of every day, and it never gets old.  Hottubs offer all of these benefits, as well as the healthy side effects, such as deeper sleep, and better circulation.  It’s not difficult ot argue the pluses of having your own hottub, and many of the joys get discovered as you get to know your hottub.

One of the great joys of having a hottub is the parties.  You’ll probably experience a sudden surge in popularity, and neighbors you didn’t even know you had might stop you in the grocery store and start dropping hints that they would like to come over.  It’s part of the appeal, being able to entertain your friends and family.  There are many wonderful evenings to be had with a fantastic dinner and a soak in the hottub.  It invites conversation even more than a dinner table, and a perfect way to spend times with the people you really care about.  The art of conversation is something that could use some reinvention these days.

Having a pleasant conversation with your loved ones is something that might be a memory you can share for years and years.  Really good conversations are sometimes hard to come by, but thankfully there does seem to be a learning curve.  Once you’ve enjoyed a long and passionate discussion with friends, it’s quite easy to stay in the flow.  My Dinner with Andre is one of the best films of all time, and it’s a dinner conversation.  Conversation is really underestimated in our culture, and it can do many things. Besides deepening relationships, they help to relieve stress because you can articulate things that have been running through the back of your mind, and it’s also a wonderful thing to find out what is on your mind.  This stress relief, combined with the natural stress relief of the hot tub, is a splendid combination.

Cape Town Festival

Visitors looking for car hire in South Africa have adventure in mind, and an independence of spirit that will appreciate all that the country has to offer the savvy traveler.  South Africa is an enormously diverse place, with diversity of cultures, languages, and landscape, and a car will offer the freedom to go off the beaten track and find some of the lesser-known treasures.  There are excellent distractions in the cities, with some of the most fascinating metropolises in the world, and having one’s own car means spending more time doing the things you enjoy, and at your own pace.  There are also tremendously exciting things to see in the country, with wilderness areas that are absolutely stunning.  Beaches to urban adventures await you here.

One of the more exciting events held in South Africa annually is the Cape Town Festival.  This is a must-see event that celebrates the cultures and heritages of the South African community, held in the Mother City.  Now in its tenth year, the Cape Town Festival operates under the motto One City, Many Cultures, to express the philosophy of the event.  This festival recognizes the diversity and history of South Africa, and is a way for the locals to come together and celebrate the unique blend of cultures here.  It is also open to visitors, of course, and is an excellent way to get to know South Africa.  Dance, performance, and other forms of public art are on display here, along with workshops and events for children, to highlight the richness of the creative community.

One of the main attractions at the festival is the music.  There are tremendously popular local acts, such as Nomfusi Gotyana, the Rudimentals, and Prime Circle.  This past year’s Cape Town Festival feartured Coda as the headliner.  They brought the house down, as did one of the other local favorites, Incognito.  One of the main culminating events of the festival is held on the last day, where the Human Rights Day celebration takes place, this year with marimba music and dancing.  Again, the emphasis here is on the variety of cultures, and is a celebration of their art forms in a forum that brings the whole city together.
