Outdoor Art in New York
Viewing great art is something that many people claim they like to do. If you’re in New York it is almost impossible to not see great works of art at some point in your trip even if you don’t specifically set out to do so. In addition to the numerous established museums, which also serve as prestigious cultural icons, and the great and sometimes avant-garde galleries there are numerous fascinating works on public display. Some of these are even visible from the windows of a luxury Manhattan hotel , so you really don’t even have to leave your room to encounter great art in the city.
However, for those of you who do manage to venture out of your cozy and comfortable hotel room, there are certain sculptures and installation pieces that you will most likely encounter at some point in your adventures. City Hall Park currently has the work of Peter Coffin on display. The series includes 13 monumental silhouettes that are not only intriguing visual displays but also take the viewer on a journey through the history of sculpture. The artist has taken famous works of art and flattened them into dark silhouettes that will look familiar though also different to viewers.
Franz West has his largest aluminum sculpture project on display outdoor in the city. The piece, The Ego and the Id, is two colorful looped works that reach up to twenty feet high. The abstract forms also have scooped loops at the bottom where passers by can take a moment and sit or stand. These are extremely popular and draw people to them. Double Take is a collection of new works from six artists and is an intriguing mix of various images that will make a viewer do a double take. Sometimes the collection presents a ghostly image that can be hauntingly seen through the trees. Another piece demonstrates a chain link fence dissolving into pixels. The project takes what is known and puts it in a different perspective or turns it into something new.

There are some standard landmarks that are typically associated with the city of New York. Many people from across the world will recognize the names of the Empire State Building, Times Square and the Statue of Liberty as they are extremely common attractions and are visited by millions of people from across the globe every year. However, that is just the beginning of the major landmarks and great cultural heritage aspects of this city. There are numerous other historic buildings and points of interests that also intrigue tourists. Some of the great hotels near New York airports are not only oriented toward offering fabulous accommodations but also provide quality information on some of the popular as well as more obscure attractions.
The Brooklyn Bridge is a great example of an historic landmark that is frequently overlooked due to its visual prominence and contemporary use. However, the history of its construction and various symbolic social associations is extremely interesting and reflective of New York’s history. The basic transportation aspect of the bridge is that it joins two the boroughs Manhattan and Brooklyn, as well as Long Island. It is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the country and construction of it was completed in 1883. When it first opened it was the longest suspension bridge in the world, spanning the East River and being 5,989 feet long.
The bridge provides some amazing views both during the day and at night when it is lit up. In addition, there have been some incredible events that have taken place on it throughout its existence. In 2008 the bridge was host to a tremendous celebration event honoring its 125 years of existence. The festivities included a performance by the Brooklyn Philharmonic Orchestra and a special fireworks display and light show. The bridge was added to the list of National Historic Landmarks in 1964.
