Jackson, Mississippi has a great deal of cultural elements that are representative of both its history and contemporary society. It is growing in popularity as a tourist destination and many of the top places to stay are recommending some of the city’s finest new entertainment options. In addition, some of the standard cultural aspects of the city are reflective of both the past and the future, which is particularly appealing to citizens and tourists alike. The MADDRAMA Performance Troupe is just one of these great establishments.
The theatre was originally established by Mark G. Henderson in 1998 on the campus of Jackson State University. At the time of its initial founding the intent was to create a stable outlet for theatrical expression on campus. This was not the only theatre on campus, though it was the first to provide an opportunity for new work development and individual artistic expression, which was necessary to the students at the time. It has since grown to become an extremely important institution and has become more directed in its mission and purpose. It expanded its scope of inclusion in 2000 and became a official campus organization in 2003. Today the company is focused on promoting a sense of excellence in theatre arts and specializes in works by African Americans.
Some of the company’s plays include the productions The Soul of Black Folk and An African American Salute to Broadway. Both of these shows present aspects of black culture and elements of music and dance. In the Broadway salute some of the most popular New York productions that were by or predominantly featured African American performers are presented. Mama, Dream Girls , The Wiz and Jelly’s Last Jam are just some of the shows that have scenes and musical numbers featured. This show represents an evolution of theatre experiences and also presents some of the glitz and glamor of Broadway.
